Power Steering Fluid Change

I just finished doing a Power Steering Fluid Change by sucking out the fluid from the reservoir a little at a time. I would empty the reservoir with a small hand held vacuum pump and replace it with clean fluid. I would drive the car for a while between each change. In the first change the fluid was very black. I don't think it had ever been changed. I did this using four bottles of new fluid. The thing is on the last change the old fluid was still somewhat brown. So Did I waste my time trying to change it without a complete flush? It has to be better than it was.
