Tappety Noise Following RPM (timing rail guides or variators?)

Hi guys,

I have started to notice a tappety/ticking noise that follows the revs, I.e. increases relatively as the revs increase. I took it by my local specialist and tomorrow they’re going to replace the oil, but their initial thinking is the timing rail guides or variators. Does anyone have any experience with a similar issue? Anything that can be shared on other potential causes?
