What kind of exhaust is this?

Just got this C6 Corvette recently and it had this exhaust on it, does anyone know what kind of exhaust this is? and if the open mesh pipes are supposed to be like that? It would seem the exhaust would only partially be coming out the tail pipes and a lot would be dissipated by the open mesh design. It also has a bad drone right around 1500rpms, but sounds great once I get above it, however cruising on the highway it's right at about 1500rpms and the droning noise is killing me, if I wrap the exposed mesh part up with heat wrap would that help the drone?
