new battery

I'm having battery issues, the battery has no charge in it, i have put it on trickle charge and the voltage jumps about from anywhere between 1.7 - 12.8 volts and then resets the charger. Put multimeter on the battery terminals and battery only reads 2.2 volts and car won't start understandably.

Any ideas before i bite the bullet and get a new battery?
